I tried to reduce the size of my carving while still capturing the character or emotion of the subject. They are carved from memory, from linden and are 1.5x2.5 to 2.5xcm in size. Have a nice Sunday afternoon. 😊 Pavel

Swallowtail butterflyhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/4293-swallowtail-butterfly/ I had some fun trying to carve a swallowtail butterfly at about 1/7th of its actual size :)

ivF2iWI.jpg

Originally just a practice piece, I'm now looking to inlay this into a larger composition. This is shibuichi 20/80, so should patinate fairly dark.

Cheers!

Midsummer greetings from Tokyohttp://127.0.0.1/topic/4433-midsummer-greetings-from-tokyo/ How have you been lately?

In Japan,
this summer was also a series of extreme heat days,
and then has been local severe raining.
In addition, COVID-19 is still relentlessly wide spreading.

Under such circumstances,
let's recover own mind occasionally and survive lithely.

I am happy if the followings will be a seed of distraction for you.
Well then...See you

Ginkgo Koshirae for Tantohttp://127.0.0.1/topic/4354-ginkgo-koshirae-for-tanto/ I've been working on the fittings for a tanto knife, and I thought I would post my progress.

These are very simple carvings and more of an excuse to practice inlays. My focus is on reducing the need for cleanup after the inlay work by doing cleaner work in the first place ;)

Ura side:

Omote side:

LNwVzZU.jpg

The fittings are copper and the inlays are shibuichi (40/60). Looking at these now, they're a little bit more proud than I'd like (again... though better than in the past 😉). I'm quite happy with the inlay work itself, it's probably the least amount of cleanup I've ever had to do on a piece, and it went a lot faster.

Still looking at the design for the kashira but I'll post back here once it's done.

Cheers, and have a wonderful week!

Puppet spiderhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/4222-puppet-spider/ Greetings to all.
Every year, a course in the production of a classic puppet is held in a small village in an
disused primary school. This is a puppet that I made here last year. Nice weekend 😉

Midnight Bamboo Tsubahttp://127.0.0.1/topic/4277-midnight-bamboo-tsuba/ I've recently completed a japanese blade, and I thought I'd share the tsuba (guard) here. It's the first time I do this kind of inlay on that scale.

uBHQPd3.jpg

pHIzs6Y.jpg

The young vs old bamboo dichotomy symbolizes growth, while the waning and waxing moon stand for the opening and closing chapters of our lives.

I spent most of the time on the obverse side with its many inlays, and I made more than a few mistakes. There are still visible signs of my crimes, but I'm (mostly) okay with where I ended up.

The reverse side features a simple katakiri carving. It doesn't look like much, but balance and confidence in the cuts were my main goal. I practiced many times before I let myself do it on the real piece. This version turned out better than any of my practice run :)

These photos were taken just after the patination bath in roksuho.

Cheers!

Spring greeting from Tokyohttp://127.0.0.1/topic/4245-spring-greeting-from-tokyo/ Spring greeting from Tokyo

Even under the COVID-19, in Tokyo, Sakura blossoms  are in full bloom also this year.
The life of Sakura is very short, full bloom period is few days.
We are enjoying just looking them without alcoholic drinks this year, to avoid infection.
You can enjoy a lot of photos below.

lock-down knife sheathhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3942-lock-down-knife-sheath/ Very loosely inspired by ainu makiri, I thought my favourite whittling knife deserved a decent sheath, its not finished yet by any means, I'm in for about 30 hours so far, about another 10 before I'm done.

Point of No Returnhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3901-point-of-no-return/ I haven't posted in a long time, and recently replied to a person who had asked a stone-carving question and Janel said she was curious about what I'd been up to lately.

This one is several years old, but it's the last complicated piece I did. It's a carved citrine face, carved tiger eye "blade" and has peridots, rutilated quartz, sapphires and tourmalines. The head detaches from the dagger and is a pendant. I think the stand for it took almost as long as the other part; I cast the silver and rolled the square wires and it took a while to get everything to fit properly.

So this is for you, Janel. I still carve some, but arthritis is making it more difficult, especially for the critical hand finishing part of it, so lately I've been doing a lot more enameling and faceting. Sorry it's slightly above the kb limit; I don't have a decent Photoshop type program anymore.

Celtic + Matauhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3849-celtic-matau/ So I've been carving again, and this is my newest.  I have a new favorite tool, On my last dentist visit I asked if I could have some of the old dental bits.  The Dentist was only too please to empty out her drawer and I now have a stack of varied bits.  So I purchased the Fordem H8.D handset with a collet that works for the dental bits.  It's amazing the fine edges you can get with the dental bits.  Anyway this carving is one of my signature Maori/Celtic mashups.  Completed in Bovine bone and about 50mm (2") long.  I'm working on a cord for it now but it will be 4 strand hand plaited 4ply waxed linen thread.   Ive ben having a nice run and sold 3 carvings in the last week.
