Digital Images by Phone Camerashttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3876-digital-images-by-phone-cameras/ When the forum began in 2005, digital imagery was in its earlier stages, in transition from slides to digital cameras in my case.  I started with a digital Nikon CoolPix 4500 camera.  It was a great leap forward for me.  With slides, I would shoot the rolls of film with an array of settings per piece, then drive an hour to the metro area (I live an hour away from Minneapolis & St. Paul, MN) wait the three hours for same day processing at extra $$ to collect the slides.  Often a reshoot was necessary.  This was a great waste of time, but it was what I had to work with.  I loved that little 4500, with the twisting body and lens assembly.  First selfie camera perhaps?  Immediate results so lighting tweaks were timely and better images followed.

For the past few years I have been using a smartphone to do the photography of my work.  I find myself wondering what others are using these days to produce the best shots of their work, to produce images for the web, or for print publication.  What do you use for processing the images?  I find that sometimes the images are not in need of processing, but they usually do need something done to them.

There are a variety of questions I have in addition to the above: lighting choices; tripod vs handheld; image processing software, etc.

Join in and make this an educational discussion.

My first three pieces in bonehttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3731-my-first-three-pieces-in-bone/ Just started and am loving the results so far. I got the carving DVD`s by Stephan gilberg

and away I went. I am only now on my 5th peice though.

The round one is one from his DVD`s the other two are just variations of

images I found online, to try different things. I am not artistic really in any way

but I can use my hands fairly well, when I know what I want to do.

The middle piece is not finished, have put it aside. I want to decorate the large white

area I have my idea, but dont know how to go about it.

Jade Chiselhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3679-jade-chisel/I made this lil chisel for carving wood. Jade blade with deer antler handle.

Works quite well compared to a store bought chisel . not the best pic I know. Fits in the hand perfectly and can be hit with a hammer at the end no problems. Ive seen cheap chisels with split ends cuz the hammerin is breakin the wood. this one is quite strong :) has a string to put aroudn the wrist so I cant drop it

thanks for lookin :)

My Sandpaper Boxhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3454-my-sandpaper-box/Hi,

Picked this up from a flea market many years ago - wooden box not fleas :P

I've been using it since to keep my cut to size sandpaper sheets and strips tidily in one place. It's very well constructed from solid walnut with brass fittings and my guesstimate is its 70 - 80 years old at least.

I'm so glad I resisted the initial urge to sand it down and refinish it, as I believe the patina acquired over the years gives it more beauty and character.

Please excuse the frivolous nature of this post, but it's about something that I really cherish.

A good day to you all

Ezz

PHOTO IMAGE SIZEhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/1295-photo-image-size/It was, and is still, very strongly recommend that the image pixel and file size to aim to FIT WITHIN THESE GUIDELINES!!!

- 72 dpi

- JPEG works great

- around 640 x 480 pixel dimension

- and around 50 K file size

Help the forum members who have slow, land line, computer modems, by posting the above recommended file sizes for your images, and also help the forum by taking less storage space in the forum's file storage area.

Work In Progresshttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3444-work-in-progress/The four carved snake walking sticks are a work in progress.

Once complete each staff will have world globe paper weight mounted onto the top of each staff.

I'm planning to mold a collar for the globe to rest on at the top of each stick,

I will use magic sculpt to create the collar.

Worm Tunneled Woodhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3437-worm-tunneled-wood/Picture of a walking cane made from worm tunneled wood.

I am currently working on a walking cane, where the worm tunneled wood has been colored with green paint and a layer of polyurethane is applied over the paint. Sounds strange, but looks really cool.

Decretive Carvings On Caneshttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3415-decretive-carvings-on-canes/I am new to the forum and I understand that the focus is on small carving. I have looked over the forum and have enjoyed the variety carvings and material that are represented here. I have primarily worked in wood. But I am interested in doing more work with bone and antler. Decretive carving canes and walking sticks is what I do most. And hope to carve Bone an antler handles. I am still not sure if this is what the forum thinks of as small carving. If not I will move on. The cane with the Angle is oak and the other 2 are walnut.

Dragon Prowhttp://127.0.0.1/topic/3412-dragon-prow/I found an old Totara strainer post and decided to carve a dragon prow which was a fun task.

The wood was VERY old and dry and had a tendency to split and splinter so a fair bit of care was needed with this project especially on the neck. Appropriately Danish oil was used to bring out the woods natural colour :D and the prow now stands guard outside my front door.
