Janel
I REPEAT THE ABOVE MESSAGE ! ! ! ! ! MANY photos since this was posted have been very much larger, than recommended, and it is very uncomfortable for those of us with slow-speed, limited, internet connections to wait, and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait for the images to download. PLEASE do try to adjust your images before you upload them when posting! Thank you, Janel ---------------------- It was, and is still, very strongly recommend that the image pixel and file size to aim to FIT WITHIN THESE GUIDELINES!!! - 72 dpi - JPEG works great - around 640 x 480 pixel dimension - and around 50 K file size Help the forum members who have slow, land line, computer modems, by posting the above recommended file sizes for your images, and also help the forum by taking less storage space in the forum's file storage area. Woodworm
Janel, Thank you for keeping this reminder active. I am on dial-up as well and am missing a lot of the posts for the reason you have stated. It takes forever to down load. NOT ONLY THAT -- when a post has a large download and I know it, I do not return even when someone else has posted a comment because the download begins and as you say -- there we sit. For those of you who do not understand what Janel is meaning and how slow dial up works, I will give you an example of my dial-up situation. For me to download a 45 second blip on u-tube -- it takes me anywhere from 3/4 of an hour to 1 1/2 hours. Janel -- should we publish here (or maybe there is a thread already) on how reduce picture size? Or as to what programs we use? Folks -- there is so much beautiful work here, and the encouragement through the comments and the shared advise and knowledge it is a shame that some of us are missing some of it. I do hope I am not out of order here. I do not intend to offend anyone. Last questions -- --- can each individual edit the size of their pictures? --- and -- if my pictures show up the right size on my computor, is it the same on everyones? Janel
http://www.thecarvingpath.net/forum/index....dpost&p=373 This is where the discussions began years back, and where we can continue to contribute answers and questions. I will bring Woodworm's questions over to the above area. Thanks Woodworm for the good questions and comments. My own example is that it takes my modem 10+ minutes to download one MB. Woodworm
Hi Janel. I am a moderator on another forum and there is an automated control on picture size. If a picture is attempted to be loaded and it is over a certain MB size it will refuse it. I do not know how this is set so I cannot help you on that part. It also only allows 3 pics per session. If one has more pics they must enter another topic or reply to same. Perhaps this would resolve issues on oversized pictures. Also the postings may be accidental sizeing due to computor skills. Just my thoughts ( because I am selfish and don't want to miss anything.) LOL.
Janel
Thank you Woodworm for the information about the controls on your forum. I agree with your observations. If I had high speed internet, I would likely not notice or be as vocal about it, but since I have a misbehaving 26,400 bps modem connection out here in the rural edge of Minnesota with little prospect for improvement, I end up being sensitive to the images that take many minutes to load. I enjoy the great images as a result of the waiting, but the combined waiting I do for all the rest of my internet work keeps me from the carving bench... I'll have to dig around to see what options there might be on the forum, though I am likely not going to change anything, and hope for the best. I regret always bringing up this particular subject. If only high speed internet were on an even playing field... Meanwhile, I also like seeing the photos, so please do keep posting them everyone! It is a great way to share visual information. J.J. Smith
I'd like to suggest a free program, that I use to edit photos. IrfanView -- http://www.irfanview.com/ The download is relatively fast, even for dial-up users and the controls are easy to master. Open the photo you want to edit, Open IrfanView, Click Image, Click Resize / Resample, Click New Size, Click 640x480, Click OK, Click File, Click Save. IrfanView has many more features that are better than the basic photo editing programs and is much easier to learn than some other advanced sites. It's worth checking out. fkvesic
Janel, might it be an idea to have a notice that sticks to the top of this folder and is always visible on the main index, so that everybody who comes here can't avoid seeing it? I don't know if the board software would allow you to do that, though.
Janel
Freda, Do you mean the link to that web site? There is a topic pinned to the top of each forum area with guidelines... maybe put links in there? Janel
fkvesic
I didn't express myself very well, Janel. I meant to have this - PHOTO IMAGE SIZE - as a sticky note, with details of what to do, somewhere that's always visible on the main board index, probably at the top. I think that when it's hidden inside a topic folder, as now, people tend to gloss over it.
Janel
That is an interesting idea, though I am not sure that is possible on this forum... I have not been very adventurous with learning about any extra capabilities with the software package. Have you seen any examples on other forums? fkvesic
This is the nearest, Janel: http://gazebo.alsopreview.com/forum It has a separate section at the top for all the guideline/admin notices. I was thinking that the 'photo size' thread might go into something like this.
DanM
The updated version of IP Board that Don is using now has the ability to have seperate sections to the forum.I'm not sure this current version has the same options.
Janel
Hmmm, I'll have a chat with Don about the new version. I've been working from morning until bed time, and now am away for a few days, and have been postponing the update to the new software version. I have also been waiting for its bugs to be worked out after its release. I can only get so much done every day, and the need for completing works is imperative now, so the forum wish list piles up. Sorry to whine, it is just that kind of year for me, where I cannot give the forum all of my first attention all of the time. My apologies folks. It is currently possible to separate areas on the pages, ie each topic page has a section separated from the main topic area. TCP's older version and skin choice is more subtle than Bladesmith's current version. I am not a whiz with the forum software, so when I make the changes, I've got some self-education to get through each time. (Now the secret is out .) Meanwhile, this version is working well enough for us for the time being. Janel
Woodworm
Hi Janel, just thought I would show you what I "HI-JACKED" off of another forum in regards to posting pictures to large. It reads --- If you want to post images on the forum keep the size to 640x480 and around 50k. I am just going to start deleting images if they are not correctly formated. Sorry, but I see no other way to deal with it. The expense of hosting a forum is in the storage space used. Today there was one post with 3 tiff images that took up the space of 64 regular size images. Folks if you enjoy this community and want it to continue, start pulling your own weight here. If you don't know how to work with digital images, take the time to read the many posts on this subject. If you are new to the forum read, listen and learn before you post and when you do post, contribute something either with a thoughtful question or answer. This is what one forum administrator has done to deal with oversized picture posting. I would have to admit, I would do the same. Trying to tell someone how frustrating dial-up is is like trying to explain how much pain you are in when all your joints are arthritic and the weather changes on you. Not everyone can afford high speed internet. Nor is it available to all. And getting highspeed off of a tower is even more costly. I do sympathize with you Janel, as I have dial-up as well. So the best I can offer to you is -- --sometimes a mother has to dish out tough Love. I could understand the large pictures if you only had a discreet post in a corner somewhere stating the prefered posting size. But you have extended your concerns almost each time an overly sized picture is posted. Yet, they still get posted. You are within your rights to delete any post , and I would support you if you did so. And I know others would as well. And it would not in any way be rude of you if you deleted any oversize picture. Just my two cents. All the best -- Bill.
Janel
Hi Bill, Thank you for your input on this subject. In earlier years, when possible, I would just resize the images but the opportunity has not occurred very often when I am at a WiFi and with extra time (usually I don't have the luxury of photo play time when at the WiFi, I am there because of a specific project). I believe that the large images happen because the newbies don't take time to read the guidelines. I just have not had the extra time this year to redo the larger images when they occur, though my immediate response is to just do it when they show up. Having little time this year has caused the large images to remain. Meanwhile, lets hope the newbies will read and learn about the guidelines. I do not want to delete posts unless the content is objectionable. Janel
Toothy
Janel, Hi after being away for awhile. I agree with Bill for what it is worth. I had dial-up but do now have a faster line but with a cap limit and so would also appreciate the smaller size. Keep up the good work. Janel
Hi Toothy Good point about the limit. If I had a dish or cell card Internet I would be concerned about volume. Thank you for the reminder about this important point.
Woodworm
Folks, I do not see it as an insult if a post is deleted for legitimate reasons. Any post. In the case of oversize Janel, I do not think it should offend anyone if you delete it. Your requests are very reasonable. If posts are deleted and stated why, then the poster can simply repost at an acceptable size. I have sat here and waited for pictures to download , just to find out they are almost half again the size of my screen and I have to scroll up/down -- back and forth to just see the picture. Tho I will not deny, what I see is worth waiting for, as again I will state, the works here are simply inspireing. A level of fairness, is what I see you asking for. You do not have to kick anyone, but gentle nudges are sometimes required. All the best to everyone --Bill
