Jacques Vesery
Bonjour mes amis I need some help from the carving path wisdom and insight dept. .... I have been contacted by a gallery owner in Russia claiming to have several galleries in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities dealing in mostly japanese art objects by people given the title "Cultural heritage of Japan". Is anyone out there familiar with any such galleries? Has anyone else had inquires that sound like this? Thanks Jacques
tsterling
Got one two days ago. I always ignore these kinds of things - and in a foreign country, too. Absolutely no recourse. And there wasn't even a link to their website - let's face it, what serious gallery doesn't have a web presence these days? Seems like a good something to pass up... I am not convinced it is one of those but still cautious. I have had success with some overseas deals and so far no problems.... as for gallery websites, one of my best galleries does not have a website.. they just don't see the need [ of course the owner is the son of Joan Witney Payson...so] Any of you Eastern European TCP members have any thoughts on this? Thanks again Tom

Unfortunately, many museums of the former Soviet Union do not have their pages on the Internet. They have a rich collection of exhibits, but these collections are not public. This fact allows officials and artists to steal part of the exhibits. In Ukraine was the case when former Vice-Prime Minister Tabachnik give State Ukraine , on behalf of the Prime Minister Yanukovich, exhibits, which had been stolen from the museum. : (

Thanks Jacques Howdy Jacques, I have a friend, an amazing gem carver, who is originally from St. Petersburg, lives in NYC at present, and is going to be going to Russia soon. He may be able to give you information on specific galleries. I do know that Russian customs can be a bear and that many well to do Russians frequent the galleries in Europe anyway. If you wish to persue Russia though you may contact me and I could pass it on and get information. Greatly admire your bowls.
