sharry t
Hi All I'm just starting out carving soapstone and wood and wondered if anyone can recommend any DVD's (available in the UK if possible) that will guide an absolute beginner through the wood carving process? I need advice with everything from choosing, sharpening and honing tools through to basic wood carving skills, such as how to carve with grained wood etc. I've had a look on you tube and found a few short videos but the quality is usually low so you can't see things like wood grain etc. I don't seem to be able to get the tools sharp, at least not for very long, so would like to see the proper way to sharpen them. I've tried looking for local classes but they don't seem to exist. I live in an area that isn't interested in teaching arts and crafts and the local council would sooner spend money on another new set of "Welcome to..." signs than backing any courses. Thanks for any advice anyone can give. Mods' please move if this is in the wrong section.

Ed Twilbeck
Do a Google or a Bing search for wood carving DVD . The list is long and plenty to choose from. I purchased a Foredome setAbout year or so back, and they sent me some free, I passed them to someone who was starting carving.
Phil White
Hello Sharry, I would suggest you try Chris Pye's website. He has a line of books and DVDs that are specifically designed for beginners, and cover a variety of subjectsm, including sharpening. His books are also excellent. sharry t
Thanks Phil, I've found the Chris Pye ones and have been thinking about getting one of them. Thanks Ed, I know that there's quite a few out there, unfortunately the problem is getting them the UK and US DVD's wont always work on UK equipment as its a different format (esp my old stuff!). There's a few video tutorials on here and they might be okay to view with a lower bandwidth. http://www.woodcarve...ng_projects.php this is one of them http://www.youtube.c...u/2/5R-_YaBZMZI
