Donle
So far the only bone I've been able to get my hands on in horse bone. It is pretty thin and full of what appears to be a honey comb texture. I've seen these antique Japanese bone carvings of people. It looks as though it was "solid" bone all the way through because of the depth differences. Any ideas???? here's a photo of what i'm talking about. Sandy Seton-Browne
If you can get whale bone it can be very thick. Cattle bone manages to get to a max of about 15mm in small areas on a big piece and camel bones are apparently similar. the small thickness leads to quite a challenge in design sometimes but then that is half the fun!!!!! Yuri
I finally got some horse metatarsi. (plural of metatarsus) That's the shankbone of the hind leg. These bones are only available from the abattoire, there is no meat on them, so they never hit the butcher.(I'm talking about countries where they do use horse meet, which is far more common than you'd think.) Well, it's a beauty. Attached is a photo of three examples, one cut in half, the other two showing the two ends. With normal bones the thickest part can hit some 20 mms or so in thickness, depending on the size of the horse. I hope te freezing works that I get these from will get some Clydesdales one day. Bythe way, whale bone, while it can be really big, is quite porous in most species and places in the skeleton. But I have seen some rather exceptional examples, that resemble ivory more than bone, and are rather large.
Yuri
Janel, I'm sorry about the size.Haven't used this feature for quite a while, managed to forget how it's done. Janel
Hi Yuri, thank you for noticing the size. They are both below 1MB at least. Here is a link to a post about using this photo resizing application webresizer.com: http://www.thecarvingpath.net/forum/index.php?/topic/2388-resizing-your-photos-for-the-forum/page__view__findpost__p__24245 Try this web based photo resizing aid: http://www.webresizer.com ---------- Clydsdales, magnificent animals. I would imagine that the bones are much heavier than the average horse's. Janel

Jo G
hello! can anyone recommend the bone I need to request from my butcher to get the largest part out of cow bone? reluctant to use horse.... I am also really looking for a company (or someone) that can make it into uniform size blocks for me as well if possible... or would a carpenter be able to do this for me? I am a small scale jeweller with no facility to cut down large pieces or smooth irregular shapes into uniform square/rectangular blocks , like a bandsaw or whatever. To make this commercial viable for my business I need them to be in blocks.. any help appreciated! Jo
Yuri
A friendly butcher should be able to cut bone into any shape and size, they all have bandsaws. The bone, if you are after the biggest as in biggest flat plate possible, is the rear shinbone, and if biggest means thickest square or near-square cross-section block, then the front shinbone.
