Dan
Any one ever tried this? What did you think? The best and worst parts of it? Any tips?
Janel
Hi Dan, I recalled that avocado seeds were carved by a couple of members. I used "avocado" in the search box and found some posts by members Dmitrij and Marcus who have carved that kind of big seed. http://www.thecarvingpath.net/forum/index.php?/topic/2317-my-works/page__hl__avocado__fromsearch__1 http://www.thecarvingpath.net/forum/index.php?/topic/2232-my-pendants/page__view__findpost__p__19437 http://www.thecarvingpath.net/forum/index.php?/topic/2179-my-first-carving/page__view__findpost__p__19268 http://www.thecarvingpath.net/forum/index.php?/topic/1236-new-from-germany/page__hl__avocado__fromsearch__1
Dan
checked out those posts before and only one was helpfull. i cut one today and it cuts like butter realy smooth while its "wet" roughed out a turtle shell. in a week or so ill try sanding and cuting it when its hard and see how i like it. hope it gets hard enough to take a polish or at least a nice finish of shellack. Yuri
I have carved avocado seeds in the past. No photos though, sorry. A week of drying is not much. I used to put the seeds in very warm spot, an keep them for maybe half a year. Thy turn a very dark, very attractive uniform brown colour. Also completely hard. ( And separate into two halves in the process.)
Dan
were you able to polish them or did they stay a mat finish?
Yuri
They polish up very well. Having said that, they also seem to be quite a bit softer than, say, bone. So while the polish is very impressive, don't expect hard wear resistance.
